Celebrating Mrs. Lillian’s Birthday

By Maryellen Sarles

October 18 and 19th was an amazing weekend! We celebrated Miss. Lillian’s 100th birthday and boy, did we celebrate big! We started off the festivities with a bang by hosting our first Fall Festival. From 10 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon, people came in steady streams to see what the fuss was all about. All day long, I saw lots of people… long-time members, old members, new members and visitors as well. It was really nice to see everyone all in one place! Kids played games and jumped around in inflatable playgrounds while adults stood around chatting. We had several performances throughout the day, various door prizes that were given away and lots of yummy junk food. The best part of it all was dunking our three Pastors: Arthur, Jim and Dan! I tried my best but didn’t have the privilege to dunk Dan. I think the dunk tank had the biggest crowd. The Fall Festival was a huge success! I heard a rumor that we’re doing it again next year. Maybe next year, I’ll get to dunk one of our Pastors. I have a whole year to practice now…

On Sunday, we kicked off our 2nd day of celebration with a big worship service. Once again, we had a packed church – which is always nice to see. We had special music, a guest speaker and a huge covered-dish meal. After lunch, we had a big ribbon-cutting ceremony (with lots of pictures taken) and opened our new Lillian Beard Deaf Connection Center for everyone to see. Everyone ooh’ed and ahh’ed at the new computer lab and classrooms, and most of all – everyone was impressed with the new café/coffee house. Several of us worked extremely hard to transform a big room into a cozy, comfy place with lots of big fluffy armchairs and several tables. The renovation isn’t complete – we have lots more to add! So for those of you who haven’t seen the new Lillian Beard Deaf Connection Center, come check us out!
